Forget Derek Jeter's injury, forget the fact A-Rod can't hit a baseball anymore, forget everything about the NHL lockout, forget everything about the Mets, and especially forget everything about the Jets—tonight, the NBA is back! Despite Hurricane Sandy's devastating impact on the east coast, tonight's three opening games are scheduled to go on without a hitch. But things aren't looking as hopeful for Thursday night's season opener between the now-crosstown rival Knicks and Nets.
“Tonight’s games will be played,” Tim Frank, the N.B.A.’s senior vice president for communications, told the Times. “We are still assessing the situation with regards to the rest of the week.” As Mayor Bloomberg noted earlier today, estimates right now is that it could take anywhere between 3-5 days to get the subway back up and running—and considering how much emphasis the team and city have put on encouraging fans to take the subway to Barclays Center, it would be more surprising if they didn't postpone the game.
Already, the Smashing Pumpkins Halloween show scheduled for Wednesday night at Barclays has been canceled. So you may have to wait a little longer for your first chance to see A'mare Stoudemire nursing his knee on the bench, or the baby Nets at halftime. The Knicks' home opener is Friday against the Miami Heat, and the Nets have a home game Saturday against the Toronto Raptors. Let's just hope you didn't spend a few thousand dollars on secondary market tickets already.
