A woman was struck and killed by a bus while crossing the street in Jamaica, Queens last night. Police say that the victim, who is identified by the Daily News as 54-year-old Maleka Begum, was crossing Merrick Boulevard at its intersection with Hillside Avenue around 7:02 p.m. when a Nassau Inter County Express Bus turned onto Merrick and hit her in the crosswalk. A witness told the paper that it was "100 percent the bus's fault," as Begum had the green light to cross. The NYPD says there is "no criminality suspected."
Begum's family members told the paper that shortly before the incident, Begum stated that she wanted to return to her native country, Bangladesh. "She said she wants to go back to Bangladesh. She doesn't like it here," Begum's son, Motiur Chowdhury said. A spokesman from NICE noted that they are investigating the incident and testing the driver for drugs and alcohol. "According to preliminary information, a pedestrian was fatally injured when that person came in contact with the rear of the bus," the spokesman told Newsday (paywall).
"She was crossing with my sister and the bus just hit her and drove through her body,” Chowdhury said. “He shouldn’t drive the bus. He shouldn’t drive at all.”
