If you were looking forward to a holiday season on bloody, bowel movement and body fluid-flecked ice, you're in for a disappointment; plans for a winter season skating rink at Williamsburg's McCarren Park Pool have fallen through.
The Open Space Alliance had been hoping to get everybody's favorite chlorinated toilet outfitted with ice from mid-October to the end of March, but decided to drop the plan because a $250,000 rink was not "financially viable." "There was the likelihood that we wouldn't have made that money back," Steve Hindy, the Open Space Alliance board chairman and founder of the Brooklyn Brewery, told Brooklyn Paper.
And McCarren Park Pool's not the only Brooklyn skate spot that's not to be: the promised indoor/outdoor Prospect Park rink that has been touted as a future replacement for Central Park's Wollman Rink will still be under construction this winter. The $74 million project was intended to reach completion this year but has since fallen behind schedule. Kings County residents looking to work on their double axles can stick with Coney Island's Abe Stark Arena, Aviator Field in Mill Basin or make their way to Manhattan to hit up a rink, and we'll all have to wait 'til next June to witness another poolside pepper spray battle.
