The New Yorker loves itself some highly relevant, news-making covers, from Obama terrorist fist jabs to pulpy soda bans to Bloomberg self-love. On this week's cover, The Zing Yorker parodies the one-sided president debate by mashing it together with everyone's favorite Clint Eastwood performance art routine. "This image seemed like a proper response to the first Presidential debate," artist Barry Blitt said, "but I'm not sure I realized how hard it is to caricature furniture."
Eastwood's Invisible Obama/Empty Chair routine seems just right for this, but there were a lot of good targets they could have hit to parody the debate—we imagine having Big Bird in place of Obama would have been just as relevant, considering the attention that one comment has gotten in the days since the debate. But it's probably better that they didn't get their aluminum foil hats on and throw in anything about cheat sheets and handkerchiefs.
The New Yorker has plenty of other material on the debate for you to read on a lazy Saturday, including David Remnick on how Obama's friends reacted to the debate, Amy Davidson on the seven chances Obama missed, and John Cassidy on why Romney won (and how Obama can bounce back).
