Need more than a new Campbell's Soup can to fill your Warhol fix? Starting tomorrow you can visit dozens of the artist's works and videos at the Met. According to the museum, "critics have noted Andy Warhol’s dominating influence in contemporary art, but as of yet no exhibition has explored its full nature or extent not only in the visual realm but also in performance, media, and pop culture." And with that, they grace us with Regarding Warhol: Sixty Artists, Fifty Years, running September 18th through December 31st. Here are some reasons to check it out... especially before the lines get as bad as the McQueen exhibit last year:
- It's More Than Just Warhol: The exhibit consists of several different rooms (each with a very different theme) mixed with 45 original works by Andy himself along with 100 retaliations, reactions, or remakes by over 60 different mixed media artists. Titles of the rooms are as follows: "Daily News: From Banality to Disaster," "Portraiture: Celebrity and Power," "Queer Studies: Shifting Identities," "Consuming Images: Appropriation, Abstraction, and Seriality," and "No Boundaries: Business, Collaboration, and Spectacle."
- “Andy Warhol and Reality TV” with Andy Cohen, Vincent Fremont, and Deborah Kass (October 2nd at 6 p.m. in the Grace Rainey Rogers Auditorium, $25): Watch how Andy's "in the future everybody will be world famous for fifteen minutes" may or may not have come true. Andy Cohen, Vincent Fremont, and Deborah Kass discuss "this unexplored aspect of Warhol’s legacy" at the event. Do you think Mr. Cohen, who essentially birthed the Real Housewives, would have been a regular at The Factory?
- Private Gallery Tour with Miguel Gutierrez and Ian Alteveer (November 29th at 6 p.m., $200): Choreographer Miguel Gutierrez and curator Ian Alteveer will walk through the exhibit with you discussing personal reactions and information about Andy's work. Bonus: drinks after!
- “13 Most Beautiful... Songs for Andy Warhol’s Screen Tests” Featuring Dean & Britta (October 6th at 7 pm in the Grace Rainey Rogers Auditorium, $50): Here we have two former members of Luna, who composed a score for a bunch of Andy's screen tests, performing live as the old 16-millimeter films screen. The 60s-era screentests are always a favorite!
