The Lower East Side's "palace of variety," better known as The Slipper Room, has been shuttered since 2010, a little over a decade after opening, but it's about to reopen with some new life in it. We got a first look at the space this week, which was given a massive makeover and now includes a new fly-rig, lighting and sound system, stage, and bar.
We're told the venue, which reopens around October 15th, "will again feature a wildly diverse range of weekly and monthly acts, bolstered by the expanded role of Pete Shapiro, who will bring his knowledge of the industry and curate an exciting lineup of musical artists, from rockabilly to heavy metal." Expect everything from magic to comedy to acrobatics, ventriloquism and striptease to variety and burlesque shows produced by long-time creative director and co-owner James Habacker. And of course, there will be music (Lady Gaga?)—Shapiro also books Brooklyn Bowl and Capitol Theater.
