As expected, the Board of Health has approved a plan to restrict the sale of sugary drinks, voting 8-0 with one abstention. Sale of sugary drinks over 16 oz. will be prohibited from establishments under the purview of the DOH, including movie theaters and restaurants. But there will be exemptions, including fruit juice, dairy and big sugary cocktails containing alcohol. The sale of lattes and teas and frappuccinos will not be restricted, but they will be subjected to a "calorie threshold." More details on that to come—and Mayor Bloomberg will be holding a press conference at 1:30 to discuss the vote. (It will be carried live on nyc.gov.)
Update: The abstaining voter was Dr. Sixto Caro, who said that the plan "is not comprehensive" and "not enough." Also, the restrictions will affect the sale of large servings of lemonade.
