Despite talk that the Tribute in Light memorial at the site of the September 11th attack in Lower Manhattan might be discontinued for financial reasons (the temporary installation costs hundreds of thousands of dollars to produce), the always-haunting twin beams burst upward from the Lower Manhattan skyline last night. The Municipal Art Society has turned over the project to the National September 11 Memorial & Museum, where it will hopefully be preserved as an annual memorial.

This morning's gathering at the 9/11 Memorial is open only to family members of the victims and officials, who for the first time will not be allowed to speak at all. (In previous years elected officials read prayers or poems.) Governor Cuomo, Mayor Bloomberg, and others will be in attendance as the names of the victims are read.

You can watch a webcast of the ceremony here. At the World Trade Center site and beyond, moments of silence will be observed at 8:46 a.m. (when the first plane struck North Tower), 9:03 a.m. (observance of time second plane struck South Tower) 9:59 a.m. (observance of time of fall of the South Tower) and 10:29 a.m. (observance of time of fall of the North Tower).

There are a couple of other events tonight that are open to the public, and the Tribute in Light will be illuminated once again until dawn.
