Two months after the FBI raided Trenton City Hall, the feds have arrested the Garden State capitol's mayor, Tony Mack, on corruption charges. The criminal complaint says, "The investigation revealed evidence of a conspiracy among the defendants and other to corrupt certain functions of Trenton City government in favor of a purported developer seeking to building a parking garage on City-owned property in exchange for cash payments totaling approximate $119,000, a total of $54,000 that the defendants actually accepted in one way or another and another $65,000 that they anticipated accepting."
The Star-Ledger reports, "Mack campaign supporter Joseph 'JoJo' Giorgianni, who owns JoJo's Steak House in Trenton, was also arrested at his home in Ewing, spokeswoman Barbara Woodruff said. Mack's brother Ralphiel Mack, who is the coach of the Trenton Central High School football team, is expected to surrender to the FBI later this morning."
NBC New York is unsparing in its coverage:
Mack's administration has been in turmoil from Day 1, staggering from one crisis to another. A housecleaning of staff at City Hall opened the door for Mack's own appointees, who quickly turned it into a revolving door. Some left over questions about their credentials, others to face criminal charges.
In Mack's first year in office in Trenton, a city of 85,000, he ran through a string of business administrators. The first resigned after a month, saying the mayor didn't believe in "good government." Another resigned just ahead of pleading guilty to embezzlement at another job.
