After three years spent expanding waistlines on the Upper West Side, chef Zak Pelaccio’s Fatty Crab is shutting down. The closure's being blamed on the expiration of the current sublease at 2170 Broadway, but the so-called "Fatty Crew" is searching for a new spot elsewhere in the neighborhood. (The wildly popular RedFarm will take over the space after Fatty Crab vacates.) This will be their final weekend, and they're offering their happy hour all day and night through Labor Day; details below.
The “Fatty Hour” starts today and continues through Monday, the last day of service. Fatty Hour Drink Specials include Tsing Tao ($5); PBR Tallboy ($3); Malaysian Margarita ($6); and the Recession Special: PBR, shot of whiskey and pickle-back ($8). There is also the Panchito Special: Tecate, tequila shot, Michelada Back ($8). All other specialty cocktails will be $8, and mixed well drinks are $6.
Upper West Side expert Jen Chung offers this analysis on Fatty Crab's closure: "It was nice, because it was big, but maybe that was the problem—you need more mainstream crowdpleasers to deal with UWS rent and UWS crowd." Will RedFarm II be able to fill the void? Stay tuned!
Meanwhile, the Fatty Crab and Fatty ‘Cue in the West Village are still in operation, and Pelaccio expects to reopen the Williamsburg location of Fatty 'Cue in October after a major revamp.
