An off-duty Brooklyn cop was shot in New Jersey last night by the estranged husband of his girlfriend who walked in on them together. The incident unfolded last night when the estranged husband, 35-year-old Robert C. Dunbar, went to his home in Manalapan, NJ around 11:30 p.m. and found his wife with the 39-year-old cop. Despite the couple's two daughters being in the house at the time, Dunbar allegedly shot the cop in the shoulder then left.
Police tracked Dunbar's cell phone to a wooded area near the suspect's home, but he hasn't been found yet. “He is still at large. He has not been located or apprehended at this point,” Monmouth County Assistant Prosecutor Richard Incremona said today. “Multiple police agencies are involved and are looking for him as we speak.” Monmouth County authorities added that Dunbar will be charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault and possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose.
The officer, who hasn't been identified yet, is a 16-year veteran assigned to the NYPD’s 63rd Precinct in Flatlands. Neighbors told the dailies that the couple was in the midst of getting a divorce: “We knew there were some problems going on. We knew they were separating,” one neighbor told the Post. “I talked to the husband, he seemed like a nice guy."
