As was expected, the Orthodox Brooklyn man who previously confessed to abducting, murdering and dismembering an 8-year-old Hasidic boy last year pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and kidnapping charges today to avoid a lengthy trial. Levi Aron, who has been diagnosed as schizophrenic, answered a series of questions from the judge in which he described how he picked up Leiby Kletzky on July 11, 2011 as he was walking home from religious day camp; Aron admitted that Leiby tried to fight back as he killed him, and that he then dismembered him in order to put his body into a suitcase, and left it in a dumpster.
According to the Post, Aron will get 25 years in jail on the murder charge and an additional 15 years for kidnapping at sentencing on August 29th. But State Assemblyman Dov Hikind told reporters he expects Aron to get sentenced to life in jail.
Although prosecutors initially vowed to not give him any deals, the Aron family didn't want to go through a lengthy trial in which they'd be forced to revisit all the details of the crime. "They're strong, tremendous faith in God, but not easy, you know, someone is always missing from the table," Hikind told reporters.
