Big Soda is gearing up for a fight. And with the public hearing on Mayor Bloomberg's proposed large sugary drink ban landing tomorrow, the propaganda is really ratcheting up. Newspaper ads, truck ads, everywhere anti-ban ads. And at the frontline of all this is Big Soda group New Yorkers for Beverage Choices. Their most notable ads, however, have been the commercials which have been running before movies recently (the audience of a recent screening of The Dark Knight Rises howled with laughter when it came on). And if that weren't enough, they also started airing this similar radio ad, which ups the ante with some wonderfully faux-New Yawk voices:

Still, while we don't necessarily disagree with the ad's sentiment, there is something about the delivery that doesn't quite work. When trying to persuade New Yorkers to agree with your policy position, maybe you don't want your ad to sound and look like a spoof? We've seen the commercial version in movie theaters multiple times now and each time the audience has reacted as if the ads were jokes. A shame, as there are arguably very serious nanny state issues at play here.

And yet the fight goes on. Today alone there are protests from both sides of the issue in Manhattan. So, will Big Soda's ad gambit play off? We'll find out soon enough! The hearing on the ban is tomorrow, July 24, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. in room 3-32 of 2 Gotham Center at 42-09 28th Street, LIC, Queens.
