Sure, there's healthy and nutritious carrot celery ice-cream at Jacques Torres, but that treat doesn't have as dainty a carbon footprint as the bicycle churned ice-cream that will be showcased and produced sans fossil fuel at Smorgasburg today, with demonstrations at 1pm and 3pm.
Brooklyn-based Ample Hills Creamery is behind this eco-friendly idea. The organic ice-cream shop, headed by ex-screenwriter/producer/director Brian Smith, also pasteurizes its own dairy and makes almost all its own mix-ins in house. The demonstrations will be held at 'Brooklyn Kitchen Island' of the Williamsburg marketplace, starring the one-wheeled, “one of a kind” stationary bike, which is equipped with a bucket apparatus that churns out ice-cream after just minutes of pedaling.
And the harder you ride, the more guilt-free ice cream you can inhale—we don't know about you, but we'd happily bike a few miles to try the Stout n’ Pretzels (made with Guinness!) and Munchies (pretzel infused ice-cream with pretzels, potato chips, Ritz crackers and mini M&M’s) flavors.
