In the wake of the horrifying massacre at a midnight screening of The Dark Knight Rises in Aurora, Colorado this morning, NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly has released the following statement:

"As a precaution against copycats and to raise the comfort levels among movie patrons in the wake of the horrendous shooting in Colorado, the New York City Police Department is providing coverage at theaters where the 'The Dark Knight Rises' is playing in the five boroughs."

At least 12 people were killed at this morning's shooting in Aurora, with an estimated 50 others injured.

Perhaps this move by the NYPD (and D.C. police) will assuage Nikki Finke's fears that box office sales may be compromised—she wrote on Deadline.com, "It is a very real possibility this terrifying tragedy may affect The Dark Knight Rises‘s opening box office today and this weekend."

Anthony Lane also touched on the subject in the New Yorker, prior to suggesting midnight screenings be suspended—he wrote: "Cynics may even predict an even more fearsome result at the box office. A modest proposal: could midnight screenings be suspended? First, for reasons of security; there are always troubled or idiotic souls who dream of fomenting repeats of a public disaster, though they seldom succeed. Second, because those screenings, starting when most people are in bed, often have a crazed and hallucinated air, which is all part of the game to those who enjoy them..."

Currently, there is no word of cancellations of screenings in New York City, so it seems, at least here, the show will go on.
