Remember way back in the spring of 2011, when Congressman Anthony Weiner was something of a rising star in the New York City political scene, and a potential major player in the 2013 mayoral election? It seemed as though Weiner's mayoral dreams were dashed by a few sexty crotch shots during the dark days of Weinergate; however, financial records released yesterday about Weiner's hefty stash of leftover campaign funds suggests he might still have the stomach to make another move towards Gracie Mansion.
Though Weiner resigned from Congress last year, he never closed his campaign fund, and still has about $4.5 million from prior mayoral runs. That makes his campaign treasury worth more than any possible mayoral candidate—other than City Council Speaker Christine Quinn (who has $5 million on hand and has already raised the maximum amount she can spend on her campaign)—and renders him eligible to run for any open city position through 2013.
The records also show he's been putting a small portion of that cash towards a Lexington Ave office space, which he began renting last May. Over the past six months, Weiner spent almost $40,000 of fund money on office expenses like phone bills, as well as $136.09 on document shredding, sparking rumors he might try to get back into the race, though Weiner denied he had any future plans for the funds when asked if he planned to do anything with them post-records release.
So, will Weiner run? And if he does, considering he raised a whopping $0 in campaign funds over the past six months, as compared to Quinn's $700,000, would anyone actually vote for him?
