Rockabus, the new private bus service connecting Williamsburg and Rockaway Beach is turning out to be quite successful, which is hardly surprising considering the Rockaways relatively recent popularity among the hipsterati. Due to popular demand, buses will now leave every hour from Williamsburg beginning at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday, as opposed to every two hours. The Rockabus will also return to Williamsburg from Rockaway on an hourly basis. In addition, the bus will also be making a stop at the less-accessible beaches of Fort Tilden!
The Fort Tilden/Jacob Riis Park bus will depart Williamsburg at 10 a.m., 12 p.m. and 2 p.m., with return buses at 3:30 p.m., 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Tickets for both the Rockaway Beach and Fort Tilden buses are $10 one way and $15 round trip, down from the $18 the operators originally charged.
We hopped on the Rockabus a few weeks ago; it takes about 45 minutes and, because it's a school bus, be advised that it's a bit bumpy, there's minimal room to store any extraneous crap that you can't fit in your lap, and you may be seated next to overly-exuberant hipsters who act like they've never ridden a bus before. But it's still a lot faster than the subway, and with your Rockabus wristband you get a 10% discount at Beer Boutique in Williamsburg, as well as $10 off surf lessons at Locals Surf School in Rockaway. These "Friends of Rockabus" deals will be expanding throughout the summer, so if you go check the Rockabus website for details.
