As violence climbed this weekend, a three-year-old boy who was playing in a sprinkler at a Bedford-Stuyvesant housing project during the sweltering weather was hit by a stray bullet. Isiaah Rivera was shot in the leg at 383 Pulaski Street just after 4 p.m. and taken to Kings County Hospital.
One witness told NY1, "He was playing. He was getting wet outside and he was caught in the middle." The Post reports, "Law-enforcement sources said the gunplay was all over a dice game nearby." Another neighbor said to NY1, "Well, they have a lot of shootings - but it's from outsiders. It's not from the people here," and one told the Times, "There have been a lot more young kids out here lately. They have been shooting dice and getting in a lot of fistfights."
The little boy is expected to survive. His father, José Rivera, told the Post, "He’s going to be OK. He didn’t cry. He’s a strong kid." No arrests have been made, but NBC New York says that police were interviewing a person of interest for hours.
