As anticipated, the ribbon was cut at Brooklyn Bridge Park's Pop Up Pool this morning, to the delight of young children, the water wings crowd and the unfairly harassed at McCarren Park Pool alike. The free pool has been funded for at least the next five years, thanks to the efforts Assemblymember Joan Millman, Councilmembers Steve Levin and Brad Lander, and $400,000 in state funding secured by State Senator Daniel Squadron. The pool is located on the "uplands" of Pier 2, beyond the Field of Free Summer Movies and closer to Brooklyn Heights than to Dumbo.

Despite being visible from the BQE (and its potential to become a brightly-colored landmark from that perspective), the pool itself is a sanctuary, well-insulated from the traffic by re-purposed shipping containers and accompanied by a sand beach. It is also a self-sufficient oasis, with hamburgers and hotdogs being served up by the Brooklyn Beach Cafe. (Which is, in turn, brought to you by the local creators of Heights Cafe). And the view of the Manhattan skyline is lovely.

Unlike many other city pools, the pool uses a ticket system, which divides the day into several "sessions" and allows visitors to enjoy other parts of the park while waiting instead of standing in line. Squadron's spokesman told us they're trying to secure funding to make it permanent.
