[Update Below] Boom. Fireworks weren't the only things going off across the five boroughs yesterday—there were a whole lot of shootings as well. At least one dozen people were shot, one fatally, before midnight last night. And the shootings didn't stop at the witching hour. Because nothing brings out the bad behavior like hot temperatures.

The non-cop bullets started in the early afternoon when, around 5:15 p.m., a 33-year-old man was shot in the head in his Flatlands, Brooklyn home. He was declared DOA by officials.

And then the bullets just kept flying. Two men were shot in separate incidents in the Bronx. A 24-year-old man was shot in the leg in East Harlem just before midnight. And then there was Brooklyn. Between just 7:20 p.m. and 11:30 p.m., eight people were shot in the borough—including two men and a woman who were shot on the corner of Marcy and Gates Avenues and two men who were shot at Thatford and Pitkin Avenues. The NYPD just confirmed that a 21-year-old male who was shot at East 128th Street near Lexington Avenue around 11:30 p.m. died from a gunshot wound to the torso.

After midnight the violence didn't exactly stop, either. Another man was shot in Brooklyn around 1:30 a.m.

So far it doesn't seem that our July 4th was quite as bad as Chicago's, but still. For goodness sake, NYC, put down the guns.

Update: And the NYPD has confirmed that while 12 people were shot between 5 p.m. and midnight, 17 people were shot in total on Independence Day in NYC.
