After worrying all last season, the Brooklyn Nets can finally breath a sigh of relief because their star player, Deron Williams, has agreed to stay with the team. Williams, who averaged 21 points per game in the lockout-shortened season, Tweeted, "Made a very tough decision today...." and included the Brooklyn Nets logo.
ESPN's sources say the contract is worth $98 million, while the NY Times says it's $100 million. Williams, acquired last year from Utah, had been considering going to his hometown team, the Dallas Mavericks, but the Times points out the Mavericks were "limited to a deal that would have been one year and $25 million less." The contract won't be a done deal until July 11, when the NBA allows deals to be made official.
Williams, who had been frustrated with the Nets' lack of success (due to injuries and poor play), is considered one of the league's top point guards. It's believed that the Nets had been consulting with Williams on free agent acquisitions from Joe Johnson from the Atlanta Hawks.
Now, the question is whether Orlando will accept the trade offer to send Dwight Howard to Brooklyn, which would involve the Nets giving up numerous players (like Brook Lopez and Kris Humphries) and draft picks.
