If you ignore the lifeguard attacks, the newly re-opened McCarren Park Pool has been a resounding success thus far! Really, feedback has been mostly very positive—and we ventured there today to give you a taste of the reality of waiting to get in. Spoiler alert: there will be winding lines.
Considering this is the opening weekend—and how sweet the new facilities look—it's no surprise that there would be long lines to get in. This video was taken around 1:30 p.m. Sunday—we were told the wait was at least a half hour. The problem is, people aren't allowed in as of 2:15 p.m.—that's when they start clearing the pool, which lasts about 45 minutes according to a Parks Department worker. The pool is closed at 3 p.m. for cleaning, and then reopens at 4 p.m.
So we'd recommend getting there early (by 11 a.m.) or waiting until the late shift (and lining up around 3:30 p.m.). Also fun: despite what city employees might tell you (and what they told us at the :50 mark in the video), you are allowed to take photos. And despite the protests of the person at the 1:27 mark, you don't need "authorization" to film people in public (as long as the video isn't for commercial use, of course).
