With temperatures in the mid-to-high 90s for the second day in a row, NYC is in the midst of its second heat wave of the summer already! With the storms in Virginia knocking out Netflix, Pinterest, and Instagram (who may have outages for a few days) in one hipster-damning blow, could things get any worse? Yes it could, if Con Edison strikes at midnight. Better get your hot pants ready!
Con Ed could lose up to 8,500 members at midnight tonight—that's when the current contract for Local 1-2 of the Utility Workers Union Of America expires. The two sides have been trying to hash out a new deal to improve pay, pension and health-insurance issues, but nothing has been reached yet. The union’s president, Harry Farrell, has suggested that Con Ed would not be able to keep power flowing to air-conditioners and lights around the city without his members, while Con Ed claims it has contingency plans if a strike does happen.
On the plus side, it's going to be less humid out today than yesterday—but we're due for some thunderstorms late Sunday and early Monday. Things should be more bearable by mid-week, with temps in the mid-80s for July 4th. Until then, stay clear of any burning rings of amor:
