The crazy Crest Fest has come a long way since its humble beginnings in the early '90s, when the father and son duo who own Crest Hardware in Williamsburg let local artist Gene Pool display some of his work in their shop. Fast forward to 2012, and the bizarre affair transcended the confines of the hardware shop into the surrounding yard, with music, craft vendors and food. But that's not to say that Crest Fest has forsaken its roots; over 100 works from artists in different mediums will be displayed in over 10,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor space along Metropolitan Avenue.
When we interviewed owner Joseph Franquinha back in 2008 he said the show was about "taking love of my community, my love of art, my love of hardware and welding them together to bridge a gap in this continually changing city, but Williamsburg in particular." That hasn't changed: proceeds generated by this year's Crest Fest (all involvement is volunteer-based) will be donated to The City Reliquary Museum and Civic Organization. Admission is free and the show will be open from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday.
Also this weekend:
Head on over to Hudson River Park’s Pier 25 to celebrate New York's maritime heritage at the Fourth Annual North River Historic Ship Festival, running through this Sunday. Enjoy free dockside tours of the Lehigh Valley Railroad Barge No.79, the 105-year-old tug Pegasus, and the retired NYC fireboat John J. Harvey. On Saturday, check out sculptures, video and sound installations, and musical performances on New York's only historic steam ship, the 173-foot former Coast Guard Lighthouse Tender Lilac. The Showboat Circus will also perform on Sunday, featuring comedians, jugglers, and trapeze artists. Boat trip tickets are free, but reservations are suggested. Tickets can be purchased for the Showboat Circus here.
With the distressing news that 5 Pointz, the Long Island City haven for graffiti artists, may actually go the way of the Condo, the time is now to explore this cultural icon while you still can. On Sunday, curator Meres One will conduct a tour for a small group of the outdoor gallery and give history and context to the giant exhibit. Meres will also demonstrate how he creates his art and take everyone to the roof to soak in the views of the Manhattan skyline. The tour and demonstration will last for an hour and a half; $35 tickets are available online.
Have you ever tried Japanese whiskey? Do you know how prohibition changed the flavor of American whiskey? What makes Irish Whiskey different from Scotch? Whether finding the answers to these questions is important to you or not, rest assured that the Astor Center's class/tasting The Wide World of Whisk(e)y will leave you buzzing. Sample whiskeys from around the world and learn more about the complex flavors and subtleties of this noble spirit. The seminar runs from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. tonight (Friday) and costs $79—think of it like your happy hour and liquid dinner all wrapped in one.
