Now don't start dancing in the streets just yet, but maybe good news everybody! Doomsday may soon be over! For the first time since the MTA's Doomsday Plan kicked off in 2010, the Transit Authority is mulling bringing some lost services back in 2013! Of course, it is also still planning on another fare hike—but then the sky is blue.

"Not a day goes by when I don’t think about restoration of services and further investments in the system," Joe Lhota, MTA chairman, said yesterday during a monthly board meeting at the agency’s headquarters in Midtown Manhattan. He went on to say that the Authority is in the "early stages of evaluation" for possible restorations.

"It looks like some figures are trending in the good direction, versus what we’ve seen last year," Andrew Albert, a board member and the chairman of the New York City Transit Riders Council, said yesterday. "The fact that the chairman is talking about it, and several board members are talking about it, I think bodes well."

Gene Russianoff of the Straphangers Campaign put out a statement saying he was "encouraged" by talk of reversing the cuts—which eliminated 36 bus routes, 570 bus stops and three subway lines. Most of those probably won't come back, but even a few would be nice. It is still very unclear how much money the MTA will have to work with to restore anything—but just a little would probably go a long way towards making riders feel less abused when the next 7.5 percent fare hike kicks in.
