At least eight syringes—including one with an exposed needle—and other medical waste were found on the sands of Rockaway Beach near Beach 116th Street Sunday night. Concerned locals called NBC New York, and the Parks Department came and cleaned up the hazardous mess yesterday. But residents say they find all sorts of trash on the beach all the time. "Usually Monday morning when I come down here, 8 o'clock, 7 o'clock in the morning, there's trash from one end of the beach to the other. It's disgusting," says local Karina Salvo. Blame it on "the hipsters" in three... two...
It's unclear at this point whether the waste washed up on shore or was left there by beach-going degenerates—or perhaps locals trying to scare off the hipster masses. (The Parks Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment.) To be sure, this isn't the first beach trash horror story, and it won't be the last. (And let's not even think about the raw sewage.) Nevertheless, here's our guide to five local beaches you can get to without a car. You'll have to do your own research to find the one closest to a methadone clinic.
