Yesterday, an 88-year-old Bronx grandmother was found beaten to death in her own home. Police are investigating the death of Evelyn Shapiro, who was found around 9:55 a.m. inside her fifth-floor apartment at 2455 Williamsbridge Road unconscious and surrounded by spilled, freshly-bought groceries. The apartment was ransacked, and Shapiro suffered blunt force trauma to the head. “She wore an insane amount of jewelry all the time,” neighbor Lisa Velez told the Post. “We would tell her to be careful wearing so much jewelry, and she said she was scared she would get robbed if she left it at home. It all looked real.”

The apartment door was found slightly ajar, and in addition to the items around her, more groceries were found in the trunk of her car—police believe she was unloading them when she was attacked. Police also aren't yet sure exactly when the attack took place—neighbor Marilyn Delgado let Shapiro’s daughter and grandson into the building early Saturday unaware their relative hadn’t been heard from in a few days.

Herma Williams, president of the Pelham Parkway Houses Resident Association, said Shapiro had lived there for more than 60 years, and was one of the original tenants: “She was a sweet lady,” Williams told the News. “Comical, with a good sense of humor. Mrs. Shapiro was a character, but we all loved her.”
