Meet Tyquan Brehon, a teenager who lives in Bushwick. In a superb short documentary by Julie Dressner and Edwin Martinez for the Times, Brehon notes that between the ages of 15 and 18, he was stopped over 60 times by the NYPD under the department's stop-and-frisk program.
"I used to play around and watch a lot of stuff like Law & Order," Brehon says. "That's why I was so confused the first time it happened, because I thought they you had to do something for them to actually stop you."
Now Brehon wants to grow up to be an attorney, citing his desire to help people his age and younger before they reach the age where they begin to be stopped by the police. "If more people came together to improve stop and frisk, I think the whole system would change." On Monday Mayor Bloomberg told reporters that he expects the number of stops in 2012 to decline "significantly." As of March, the NYPD was on track to break last year's record number of stops.
