Yesterday morning, a 31-year-old man was stabbed in the East Village. According to relatives, victim Corey Capers was trying to save a woman—either a family friend or his aunt—from abusive boyfriend Carl Knox, who instead stabbed Capers to death. “He was a wonderful guy. He had a heart of gold. He died trying to protect someone,” friend Nashaba Torres told the News.
According to police, the incident happened just before 3 a.m. in front of 737 East 5th Street. Capers, who has a five-year-old son and worked as a handyman, tried to intervene when he came upon the boyfriend beating his relative. The News identified the woman as "a grandmother and family friend" of Capers, while the Post says it was his aunt. Police are now searching for the 47-year-old Knox, also known as "Abdul Hakim."
Another friend told CBS they weren't surprised by Capers heroism: “He was a good dude, was always with his kids,” they said. “Always with his kids. That’s all I would see him with, with his kids. I never saw him get into any trouble. If anybody needed help, he was always there to help. It’s too bad that it turned out to be like this.”
