[Update Below] A person was fatally hit by a train on the Upper West Side this morning. According to FDNY, the incident occurred around 9:48 a.m. between the West 96th and 103rd Street stations—they add that the male victim was hit by a northbound 1 train and was DOA at the scene. Initial reports said the victim had jumped in front of the train—which some riders also told us at the scene (and some tweeted about)—but police haven't confirmed that yet.
Witnesses also said that a lot of smoke came into the car. A firefighter there told us "someone got hurt" "on the train." NYPD and FDNY were accessing a service area in between 96th and 103rd, which particular attention around the 99th/100th Street area. The northbound 1 train has been suspended from 42 Street to 137 Street—you can check MTA for more info about service changes.
Update: According to West Side Rag, the 28-year-old man who was killed apparently jumped from the 1 train while standing in between two cars; the NYPD believes his death was a suicide. Service has also now been resumed between 42 Street and 137 Street.
