Queens rapper Nicki Minaj has been at odds with Hot 97. Last week the station's DJ Peter Rosenberg suggested on air that Minaj's new single "Starships" is not "real hip hop," which snowballed into a huge beef between the station and the performer. Minaj immediately pulled out of their Summer Jam concert, under the urging of Lil Wayne (she's on his Young Money label) which she was set to headline this past Sunday. When she called in on Monday to explain her reasoning and announce that she would do a free concert in NYC for her fans this summer, she got into another argument, this time with DJ Funkmaster Flex... who has now sworn to take down her career.
"We ain't fuckin' with commercial rappers no more. If you lost the fuckin' street, it's your fault! If you don't go gold, it's your fault! I'm dedicated to tearing you down! Fuck with me! We gon show you, mama, you think you didn't sell records this time?"
According to ArtsBeat, "Minaj said it was bad form for Mr. Rosenberg to criticize her just before a show when she was giving her time to benefit the radio station. She also suggested that Mr. Rosenberg had singled her out because she is a woman." Rosenberg is not apologizing for his commentary, and said on air, “There is a get me to apologize movement, to which I can say, I’m absolutely not apologizing, because I didn’t do anything wrong." For those on Team Rosenberg, the main school of thought here is that Minaj is crossing over to a pop sound, leaving hip hop behind.
And it's not a hip hop beef without Lil Kim, who chimed in with a series of Tweets: "For those of u who have been brainwashed by the fraud... Let's open our eyes now people... the clone is not bringing ladies out for the luv. It's strictly because I'm doing it! Love u Team Kim and all my fans across the world... they'll believe one day very soon!!" Minaj's boyfriend also chimed in, Tweeting: "YOOO PETER ROSENBURG WHEN I COME TO SUMMA JAM YOU GETTING PUNCHED IN YA FUCKING FACE U FUCKING PUSSY!!!!!!!" So, yeah, this should end well.
Here's the song in question:
