[UPDATE BELOW] Two men were stabbed in the East Village last night, with one incident leaving a large blood trail outside the Fine Fare on Avenue C near East 4th Street. According to the FDNY the call reporting a stabbing came in around 9:18 p.m. and a 50-year-old victim was removed to Bellevue for treatment. His condition is unknown. The Local East Village reports that a 59-year-old man was stabbed around 8:30 p.m. in East River Park near East 8th Street and FDR Drive. 50-year-old Conrado Speck was arrested in the incident and charged with assault with a weapon and criminal possession of a weapon. The victim is expected to survive his injuries. An NYPD spokesman had no information on either incident.

An EV Grieve reader's account provides perspective:

A reader notes that last night around 9:15, seven police officers, both uniformed and in plain clothes, chased down, handcuffed and searched a man in a baseball cap, T-shirt and shorts on the east end of the Fine Fare storage cages on East Fourth Street at Avenue C.

The NYPD cordoned off the area, placed the man on a stretcher and into an ambulance. An officer on the scene told the reader that the man had been chased from elsewhere and caught at that location. The reader also noticed that the man in custody was bleeding while standing against Fine Fare.

A tipster who lives nearby passed along these photos of the scene in front of the Fine Fare today and writes via email that the grocer refuses to clean up the blood spatters. "I talked to the manager who said he wasn't going to do anything about it and threw me out of the store," they write. "I called 911 and 2 officers came, picked up those gloves and gauze you see from the street and threw them in the corner garbage can, and nothing else."

City code section 16-118(2)(a) [pdf] notes that "Sidewalks…along the building perimeter must be kept clean." We've only witnessed NYPD or EMS officials cleaning up bodily fluids in the case of fatalities, and even then the effort is minimal.

[UPDATE]The Local East Village's Stephen Brown reports that the two stabbings were actually one.

The neighborhood’s top police officer, Deputy Inspector John Cappelmann (he was promoted from captain last week) confirmed the sequence of events, saying that the perp fled the park and was found at Avenue C and East Fourth Street. Initially, the police reported that only the suspect found at Fine Fare was arrested, but Inspector Cappelmann revealed that the 59-year-old “victim” ended up in handcuffs, as well.

“It was two people who are acquaintances. They got in a dispute in the park, wound up assaulting each other and both were charged,” Inspector Cappelmann said.
