There are baby tigers on the Lower East Side right now, but don’t worry, they’re not roaming free—they’re part of Norwegian artist Bjarn Melgaard’s “Ideal Pole” exhibit, now showing at the Ramiken Crucible gallery. Two five-month-old female Bengals are on display in a cage in the center of the gallery—rolling around, playing together and doing other cute cat-like things (can we get some of these in bodegas?), now through Sunday, during the hours of noon to 6 p.m. (at night they're kept in trailers). While there's a "no touching" policy, as you can see in the photos, you can still get pretty close (stay tuned: there are more photos from Katie Sokoler to come).
We dropped by this week and the gallery staff assured us that they have all the legal paperwork to keep them there, and that, "the tigers have fun together. They like each other." (We've reached out to the Humane Society of the U.S. to find out what the rules are about this sort of thing, because that cage looks too small to us.)
The animals are part of a group show, and outside of their cage are separate art installations—like Peggy Noland's rack of ornate oversized adult diapers and Richard Kern's semi-nude photos of Artforum magazine's associate editor Caroline Busta.
