Police say that a 21-year-old woman was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver early this morning in Union Square. The incident happened around 1:30 a.m. when the driver, who was in a blue dump truck heading eastbound on 14th street, attempted to turn southbound onto Broadway at the same time the woman was crossing the street. "He didn't see her. It was a big truck, a dump truck," eyewitness William Cayame told the News. "The light was for her. She had the walk sign."
"She fell on the floor. I just heard the sound, like bones breaking," he described. "It was awful." The victim was rushed to Beth Israel Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. "I ran to tell the two officers and I couldn't speak. I was like in shock," Cayame said, adding that he tried to get the license plate number as the truck fled: "I was trying to see the license plate number, but I couldn't see it." No arrests have been made, and police are now using surveillance video of nearby businesses to try to identify the truck.
