New York's influx of west coast interpretations of Asian food continues! Hot on the heels of Portland import Pok Pok's two locations comes the highly anticipated arrival of San Francisco's much-loved restaurant Mission Chinese. The tiny restaurant in the old Rhong Tiam space in the LES officially opened last night and immediately had a line outside. Luckily always-reliable Gothamist flickr contributor wallyg got in for an early tasting with their camera and we've got the food porn to prove it.
But first, a note about the restaurant. By design, it isn't much to look at. Except, we guess, for the dragon that graces the roof of the dining room... located down a bland hallway from the entrance (well, and the bathroom, if you are a Twin Peaks fan). The star here is chef Danny Bowien's short and pretty impressively affordable menu. Still, we've got to say that Mission Chinese is doing one thing very much right straight out of the gate. Just like its big brother by the bay, the newcomer will be donating a portion of every sale to charity. In our case, that's .75 percent going to the Food Bank of New York.
But before you run off to get in line for dinner right now we should warn you: they aren't open on Wednesdays.
