Remember when TLC Commissioner David Yassky told us in March that a fare increase was "not on our agenda?" What a difference 76 days makes, because today Yassky indicated that fares may go up by as much as 16% to 20% this summer. "The fare hasn't changed since 2006, so it is reasonable for taxi drivers and fleet owners to put this on the table,” he tells the Daily News. Woah, if Yassky keeps it up he might just earn himself the title of Deputy Commissioner of Public Information for the NYPD.
TLC spokesman Allan Fromberg tells us, "It’s true that that a fare increase was not on the agenda at that time...This is just the beginning of the process." The current average fare, if you can make it in the cab, is $11.82 for a 2.76-mile trip. A public hearing will be held on the 31st to discuss the hikes.
