Times Square may no longer have TV-based ESPN Zone or the modeliciously tacky Hawaiian Tropic Zone but that's okay. Today news arrives that no less an authority on TV tack than Food Network's Guy Fieri is planning to bring a restaurant to the area. But will it be a diner, a drive-in or a dive?
According to the Times, Fieri is planning to open a new restaurant on 44th Street called Guy's American Kitchen and Bar (as opposed to opening a branch of his existing Johnny Garlic or Tex Wasabi restaurants). Further, according to a release, for his first venture in the Big Apple Fieri is teaming up NYC mini-chain Heartland Brewery for the newcomer in the New York Times Building. So expect a big emphasis on the "Bar" part of the restaurant's name. Because they are already planning "three full bars, a California-centric wine list, and an extensive draft beer program." So, like the new Beer Authority across the street but even bigger and with more Midwesterners.
So, to recap, the bad news? New York is soon going to be stuck with a permanent Guy Fieri presence. The good news? Said presence will be in Times Square and you never, ever, ever have to go there if you don't want to. Still, maybe when it opens we can all persuade famed Olive Garden reviewer Marilyn Hagerty to come back to town to check it out?
