Next time you dump out the stale water that's been sitting in your Brita for two weeks, think twice. Yesterday, the New York City Water Board approved a seven percent water rate increase for city residents. The price hike, which was proposed by the Department of Environmental Protection, is the smallest increase the city has seen in seven years, but, as Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer noted in a release yesterday, in the past decade water rates have increased by nearly 150 percent!

Water rates and other service charges are often subject to increase in order to help close debt service on capital projects. And the city's debt service has increased by nearly 200 percent in the past ten years. And despite lots of DEP budget-tightening, prices for amenities like water keep on climbing. So if you were thinking of stocking up on dry shampoo, now's the time—the price hike will go into effect on July 1.
