Here's some news to perk up fans suffering from Mets Seasonal Affective Disorder: Mr. Met has been named the most beloved mascot in all of sports. Take that, Philly Phanatic.

The fan survey was done by The Marketing Arm’s Davie Brown Index, which measures people’s perceptions of celebrities and their influence on brands. The "red-stitched Übermensch" born without a first name has come to serve as a symbol for everything in Mets world, and his smiling (or crying) face is the only constant for the oft-beleaguered club. David Wright was happy with the selection: “I was going to say Mr. Met, but I didn’t want to seem like a homer. I could definitely see it.”

Mets pitcher and amateur Tolkien scholar R.A. Dickey was more philosophical about Mr. Met's role in this corporeal world: “There’s no scooter he rides,” Dickey told the News. “He’s not breaking the other team’s helmet into pieces. Maybe the appeal is that he’s like everybody else. He walks around just like they do.” He may still have to do bar/bat mitzvahs and christenings, but maybe he'll finally be able to cut back on the handjobs now:
