Their rivalry has plateaued in recent seasons, but the Yankees and Red Sox are renewing it now in Boston with today's opener of a three-game set. The game will mark the official 100th anniversary celebration of Fenway Park and will see the both teams play in throwback uniforms. It will also see a rivalry that while still exciting, has seen better days.

Take the 18 annual meetings, the lack of a postseason meeting since 2004 and the second wild-card playoff spot, and regular-season encounters don't mean as much as they have in the past. The Yankees (7-6) have gotten off to an uneven start, but they look much steadier than the Red Sox, who are 4-8 and have allowed the most runs in baseball. They're without their injured closer (Andrew Bailey), center fielder (Jacboy Ellsbury) and left fielder (Carl Crawford). Former Mets manager Bobby Valentine has had some early-season problems even before the team's record is evaluated.

The Yankees are starting Ivan Nova, Freddy Garcia and CC Sabathia against Clay Buchholz, Felix Doubrant and Daniel Bard. Expect plenty of runs (as usual) and some nice nods to history. Ballparks don't turn 100 every year. And even with a second wild-card the powerful American League West could threaten the East's hegemony. Come September these April games could play a role in determining if one, two or three AL East teams make baseball's postseason.
