The presidential election isn't here yet, not by a long shot, but we're getting closer. And with Mitt Romney the presumed Republican candidate, attention is once again turning to who the former Governor of Massachusetts will tap to be his running mate. According to the latest Quinnipiac poll, the 800 lb. gorilla in the room continues to be—wait for it—New Jersey Governor Chris Christie.

31 percent of those polled said Christie would be a "good choice" when asked about potential running mates for Romney—who nationally polls just behind President Obama in a matchup. At the same time 18 percent said he'd be a bad choice and 49 percent said they didn't have an opinion. When you look at just Republicans, however, it looks even better for Christie with 44 percent saying he's a good choice, 10 percent saying he's a bad choice and 44 percent not having an opinion. Finally, for the key Independent voters Christie comes in as a good choice 33 to 18 percent bad.

Coming in after Christie was Florida Senator Marco Rubio who was called a good choice by 24 percent and a bad choice by 14 percent overall and 27 good to 14 percent bad among independents. Just trailing him was Wisconsin Representative Paul Ryan with 23 to 17 good/bad overall.

While Rubio has come out and said he isn't interested in being Veep, Christie earlier this year said that while you can "bet on me being the governor of New Jersey into next year" if "Governor Romney were to come and talk to me about it, I'd listen." So they will be talking, we guess.

Other potential running mates asked about in the poll include Ohio Senator Rob Portman, New Mexico Governor Susana Martinez, Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal and Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell. But who knows, maybe the Romney camp will pull a surprise out.
