What is it with posh Bowery newcomers co-opting the neighborhood's seedy past? Especially those on or near the corner of the Bowery and First? First we had Daniel Boulud's "cleverly" named DBGB Kitchen and Bar. Then John Varvatos went and took over the old CBGB's space and now the expensive clothing store on the corner, Blue & Cream, is going to be hosting an in-store photo exhibit dedicated to the gone-but-not-forgotten nearby dive Mars Bar. Because if there is one thing we can all agree on about the old girl's clientele, it was how much they just loved the kind of people who buy and sell $220 black t-shirts!

So, what exactly is Blue & Cream going to show? Oh, better to let them explain it as earnestly as possible:

This event is a tribute to the iconic L.E.S. bar that was recently brought down by NYC wrecking ball in 2011. This famously seedy dive was a landmark for 25 years in the Bowery and East Village neighborhood and home to Bowery bums, punks and junkies alike. Blue&Cream would like to preserve and pay homage to this ever-changing historic district of Manhattan with an in-store photo exhibit changeover...

The new exhibit, set to be revealed on April 11, 2012 will be “A Tribute to Mars Bar.” Photographer and native New Yorker, Debby Hymowitz, has captured the essence of this gritty and martyred establishment through her brilliant photos that will help carry on the Mars Bar essence, just as it should be remembered. After all, this is Blue&Cream’s neighborhood. It’s time to pay our respects with a really great party. Just as any Bowery native would want it!

Having grown up on the Bowery around the corner we heartily disagree with their opinion of what we'd want—but what do we know, we can't afford to live where we grew up anymore anyway! Still, if you wanted to check it out well, for what it is worth, the opening night reception for the new Mars Bar photo exhibit is on April 11 from 6-8 p.m...
