One person is dead and another was left in critical condition after both were hit by subway trains in separate incidents early this morning. Police say that a 24-year-old drunk man somehow got onto the elevated tracks at Broadway and 31st Street station in Astoria, Queens, around 5:15 a.m. He was fatally struck by a Manhattan-bound N train.
In a separate incident in Manhattan, a 46-year-old man was hit by a northbound C train at the 96th Street station (near Central Park West) around 8 a.m. “The train operator actually saw the person on the tracks but couldn’t stop in time,” said an MTA spokesman. Officials say the victim was taken to St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital with head trauma, but is expected to survive.
According to West Side Rag, this is the fourth time a person has been hit by a train on the Upper West Side since Feb. 29. There has been a definite uptick in people getting hit by subways this year (an MTA spokesman put it at 21 fatalities as of last week), including more than a few covered here.
