John Liu has had a bumpy time as New York City Comptroller. Despite doing a solid job of keepingcity agencies in check, he has been continually probed and prodded over his campaign money (remember when his 25-year-old Campaign Treasurer was arrested?). So naturally, the Post is now citing sources who say he's preparing to give up his current gig and risk it all on a run for Gracie Mansion (ahem). Good luck with that.
"I’m going big—or I’m going home," the tabloid says Liu has told top allies in the past week while explaining why he wouldn't be making another stab for the title of city's top money man. "In other words, he’s going to run for mayor or not run for office at all," another insider reportedly explained (because it was so unclear?).
The move, which Liu's office isn't commenting on or confirming, isn't exactly surprising. He's been very clear that he wants to be mayor someday. But it might very well make sense for him to reconsider. The 2013 mayoral field is shaping up to be a tough one, even without Anthony Weiner, and Liu's money problems haven't been great for his poll numbers. Another term in the Comptroller's office, in which he can show that he is quite competent at his job, really wouldn't hurt.
