Don't look now, but the Knicks are UNSTOPPABLE again! That's right, the Knicks will ride their new coach to win after win and never ever lose again. Oh wait, that was just the Linsanity speaking. But the Knicks really are undefeated under interim coach Mike Woodson, winning 102-88 last night, their third straight win. Jeremy Lin, who was perfectly suited for Mike D'Antoni, was able to contribute substantially in the victory. Lin led the Knicks with 19 points, 7 rebounds, and 6 assists on just 2 turnovers. Carmelo Anthony and Amar'e Stoudemire both added 16 points. Each of the three Knicks wins under Woodson have been by double digits.
The Rangers are heading in the wrong direction and their competition is nipping at their skates. New York still leads the Eastern Conference after their 3-1 loss to the Avalanche, but things aren't going so well for the Blueshirts. The Rangers have lost 5 of 7, while the Penguins have won 11 straight games. Henrik Lundqvist returned to action after missing two games because of the flu, but was out played by Colorado goalie Semyon Varlamov. Varlamov had 41 saves, including 10 shorthanded, stonewalling New York at nearly every opportunity.
As mentioned previously, the team chasing the Rangers in the Eastern Conference won last night as well. The Penguins defeated the Devils 5-2. New Jersey just had 14 shots on goal while Pittsburgh had 44 shots.
While the Rangers and Penguins are vying for the top spot in the East, the Canadiens and Islanders were playing for something much different. Entering the game last night, the Islanders were in last place, but with their 3-2 win in a shootout, the Habs now have the honor of being in last place. Josh Bailey's goal in the sixth round of the shootout won the game for the Islanders.
Unfortunately for the Nets, basketball games are four quarters and not three periods. Despite having a 12-point lead after three, the Nets were unable to end the night with a win, instead losing to the Hornets 102-94. Jarrett Jack hit what proved to be the game-winning shot for the Hornets when he made a three-pointer with 1:28 in the game. With that 95-94 lead, New Orleans never looked back.
