A New York Times headline on this date in 1888 read "CRUSHED UNDER THE SNOW. Struggling to Throw Off Its Heavy Burden. The city still in a paralyzed condition. The wheels of business motionless, traffic and communication not yet recovered, and the peril of a scarcity of food and fuel added to the blizzard's effects". Another headline was "BROOKLYN ONE HUGE DRIFT". A third story described how people walked on an ice bridge from Wall St. in Manhattan to Fulton St. in Brooklyn. There was also this curious and amusing blind item.
Instead of a nor'easter we've got a high pressure system giving us plenty of sun and warmth today. Look for a high in the lower 70s (the record is 75 set in 1946). The winds will swing around to come out of the east tomorrow and that will lower Thursday's high to a bone chilling 60 degrees in the city. The high pressure system will retreat during the day on Friday, leaving us with a high in the upper 50s.
As the high retreats and a weak cold front approaches there will be a chance of showers from tomorrow night until early Saturday. Fair weather, with highs in the 60s, will return on Saturday and is expected to be around all next week.
