[Update Below] A man jumped in front of a train at the 72nd Street and Broadway subway station in the middle of rush hour this morning. The victim was struck by a northbound 1 train just before 8 a.m.; police tell us he was rushed to St. Luke's Hospital in critical condition. According to DNAInfo, an NYPD spokesman initially said he had died. Update: That's now confirmed.
Because of the incident, MTA shut down power to the track, and has rerouted northbound No. 1, 2 and 3 trains express from Times Square to 96th St. Also, some 2 trains are running on the 5 tracks from Nevins Street in Brooklyn to 149th Street in the Bronx. We'll have more updates as information becomes available.
Update: Train service is reportedly restored on the local uptown 1, but during the rerouting, some straphangers trying to get to 50th, 59th and 66th Streets were frustrated. One businessman, trying to get to 59th Street, went to the downtown platform, only to find it overflowing and all downtown trains packed to the gills. When informed why his local train had turned express, the man paused, "Wow. It didn't seem like it was a good thing," and then he continued upstairs to Broadway to find a cab.
Update: A second person was struck by a train at the same station at W 72 Street and Broadway just before noon today.
