A fluffy little toy dog named Malachy, a 12-pound Pekingese who placed second at last year's Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, stole the top honors last night, besting a Doberman pinscher, a German shepherd, an Irish setter, a Dalmatian, a Kerry blue terrier, and a wire-haired dachshund in the finals. The "Best in Show" victory has thrilled fans of of the pedigree but outraged others, who dismiss the toy breed as a "dust bunny" more closely resembling a cat. As one Vin Brzyski put it, "It looks like it should be on the end of a stick cleaning up my cobwebs."
Malachy, age 4, will retire to his estate in Pennsylvania after last night's win. "We are in the presence of an imperial Pekingese," his co-owner Iris Love (seriously?) cooed last night in the winner's circle. "That doesn’t happen very often. He will be pampered." Gothamist's Christopher Robbins and photographer Katie Sokoler were deep in the bowels of Madison Square Garden last night, and we'll have an in-depth look at the action a little later; for now check out Robbins's Twitter wisecracks from last night. (Sample: Handler charging $300 to take a nap in this dog's folds. We offer $250 #outbid.)
