When do you think the latest date is that really cold weather can strike New York? That depends on how you define "really cold" but this graph of every January through March daily temperature since 1971 has the answer. The squiggly line is the mean and that bottomed out a couple weeks ago at 29 degrees. Following the January Thaw, the curve reaches another nadir on February 5th before beginning a slow increase. We should dutifully point out that the thaw, like all the day-to-day squiggles in the line, is not statistically significant -just look at that variability. From a climate perspective there is still a chance of cold weather, but the odds are against us having a brutally cold week like what happened in 1979.
Meteorologically there's no chance of cold weather today or tomorrow. High pressure over the southeast will bring clear skies and highs right around 50 both days. Good weather for a parade, don't you think? A warm winter here means that there's probably a cold winter elsewhere and that would be Europe, where they've had some of the coldest and snowiest weather in a quarter century. A couple of upper-level disturbances may bring rain or snow on Wednesday and the high will only be the normal of 40 degrees.
Yet more warm weather should arrive on Thursday and Friday. A strong cold front on Friday night looks like it will bring an end to the warm streak. Look for the weekend to be sunny and chilly with highs only in the mid to upper 30s.
