Let's start February by taking a quick look back at last month's weather. It won't come as any surprise to learn that January was warm. Just how warm is anybody's guess! The weather instruments located near Belvedere Castle suffered a power failure over the weekend so the Weather Service missed out on several days worth of temperature readings. Looking at surrounding stations our best guess is that Central Park was five degrees warmer than normal. While that's not warm enough to crack January's top ten it is the eleventh straight month that's been warmer than average.
The warm January is giving way to a warm start to February. A low pressure system north of the Great Lakes will bring another warm day. Look for a high around 60 this afternoon. An evening cold front will bring cooler weather tomorrow. Thursday's high will only be in the upper 40s. If you're keeping track at home that's about ten degrees warmer than normal for Groundhog Day. Clear skies overnight will give way to clouds by morning. Will Staten Island Chuck see his shadow? What does it mean in our winterless winter if our favorite rodent predicts six more weeks of winter?
Slightly cooler air arrives on Friday as high pressure settles in over the region. Friday's high is expected to be around 45. Saturday and Sunday might be a degree or two cooler. The ten day forecast shows no excessively cold air anytime soon.
